Emmy Nominations 2015

Emmys 2015It’s that time of year again. Time for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to tell us what shows they realize exist. Proving controversy is good for business, Game of Thrones leads the pack with 24 nominations. Among Thrones many nominations is two nominations for direction. Including One for the controversial “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken.” You know the one where Sansa is raped and it makes Theon sad.

This year the Emmys has changed some of it’s rules and regulations, fun! The Vox has a good run down on the changes and what they mean. The biggest change being, shows that are 30 minutes in length are comedies and hour long shows are dramas. Really is there any better way to categorize shows than time limits? I don’t think so. What hasn’t changed is unless you are a network, HBO, Showtime, or Netflix show you don’t exist. If you’re a genre show outside this bubble you really don’t exist. One major exception this year is Tatiana Maslany. She is finally being nominated for her revolutionary work on Orphan Black. It only took the Academy three years to catch up on Maslany, not bad.

Biggest snub of this years pack, Ellie Kemper for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. With the show, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski (hey more controversy), and Tina Fey all being nominated it’s strange that they failed to recognize Kemper. It’s her performance that anchors the show. It’s not a simple performance either. Her outward optimism hides inner pain and rage without being a mask. Kimmy really is optimistic and happy while also being angry and sad about what happened to her. She is a multifaceted character who Kemper skillfully brings to life.

Onto the nominations. Who will Jon Hamm lose to this year?
